On the Road: Southern Routes
Navigating the Rift Valley and Beyond
Route 1: Addis Ababa to Arba Minch (460 km)
Leaving the capital via the **Butajira Road**, travelers witness a landscape in transition. The journey begins in fertile, rolling green hills—home to prehistoric sites—before descending into the acacia savannas of the Rift Valley floor.
Almost entirely paved. Expect a smooth 1-day drive if skipping lengthy site visits.
Route 2: The Trans-African Highway (770 km)
Mixed quality tar. Significant construction is ongoing toward the Kenyan border.
This legendary route passes through the heart of **Rastafarian Shashemene** and climbs into the coffee-rich **Sidamu Highlands** before dropping into the semi-arid Borana plains.
Refined Stop: Aregash Lodge is the premier weekend break or overnight en route.
Entering the Wilderness: Beyond Jinka & Turmi
Once you leave the paved network behind, the Omo Valley reveals its wilder side. Roads here are dictated by the weather and seasonal river flows.
